May Ann Wood

Sheri Swope of Dallas, Texas contacted Cllr Debra Storr with a query regarding the Rev. William Thomson (see Appendix 1).  Sheri bought a sampler dated 1850 made by May Ann Wood which also named the Rev. William Thomson and Dr John Ruxton.  These names are traced to Belhelvie.

We already know about the Rev William Thomson.

May Ann was 14 when she made the sampler.  She was christened on August 20, 1836 in Belhelvie.  Her parents George Wood and Margaret Duff were married on June 3, 1820.    May Ann married James Calder on May 10, 1856 in Belhelvie.

Information on Dr John Ruxton found so far is scant - an announcement for his third daughter's wedding.  She was married after he was deceased in 1882.  His third daughter was Barbara.  She married a Mr. George
Stodart on Thursday, August 17th 1882 at Hill of Fiddes, Foveran.  Dr. Ruxton was married to Barbara Mitchell on either December 14th or 18th, 1845.  Barbara was born on May 26, 1856 in Foveran.

All of the information on May Ann came from a geneology web site in the United States derived from the Parish registers, 1624-1854 Church of Scotland, Parish Church Belhelvie.

Thanks to Sheri for the information and the photograph of the sampler.
